The Basset Hound Health Certificate Scheme:

The Health Group have given their support to the breeders who support the Health Certificate Scheme, they have embraced the concept of health tests and of testing. They know how important it is for the future of the breed and they are investing in tomorrow. They are very mostly people who show their dogs. This has produced a well used implement, a knowledge database made up from people who have lived with Basset Hound 24/7 and have a long term commitment to the breed which on some cases goes back five or more decades. Priceless!

Health Assessments

The aim of the health assessment is to encourage all owners and breeders to have their dogs assessed for visual conditions that may cause pain or discomfort due to exaggerated conformation. The health assessment forms will provide the Basset Hound Health Group with valuable data relating to the health of the breed.

The BHHG arrange visual health assessments at many of the Breed Club Championship Shows and General Championship Shows up and down the country throughout the year, they are free but are by appointment only and can be booked by emailing the Co-ordinator. It is hoped that BHHG will soon be able to also offer and subsidise POAG DNA tests at the same shows, watch this space!

The Health Certificate Scheme consists of two elements.

Part 1 is a Visual Health Assessment and has to be returned to the Co-ordinator -details on the bottom of form.

Part 2 consists of Veterinary and DNA testing. The KC/BVA Gonioscopy Test which is carried out by a specialist

BVA Eye Panellist and graded 0, 1, 2 and 3. Also a POAG DNA Test available from Pet Genetics Lab

Please note the BHHG only accept DNA results from the Pet Genetics laboratory

Part 1 is the basic and qualifying certificate to become part of the scheme.

The Bronze Certificate is a Veterinary Assessment which you can arrange with us as described above or by your own vet who may charge you. If you are seeing your own vet you will need to downloaded it here:

What will happen to the information you provide?

All information will be treated in the strictest confidence and no names of owners, or dogs details will ever be published.

Bronze Certificate; is designed for young Basset Hounds to undergo a basic health assessment. (At any age

from 6 months on)

Silver Certificate: to claim your Basset Hounds Silver Certificate he/she must meet the following

criteria

Bronze Certificate:

To have undergone a KC/BVA Gonioscopy/PLA Test, irrespective of the result

Silver Plus+ Certificate: to claim your Basset Hounds Silver Plus+ Certificate he/she must meet the

following criteria

Bronze Certificate

Silver Certificate (receiving a Gonioscopy/PLA Grade 3)

To have had a DNA test carried out by one of the recognised laboratories for POAG

Gold Certificate: to claim your Basset Hounds Gold Certificate he/she must meet the following criteria

To have had a DNA test carried out by one of the recognised laboratories for POAG

Gold Plus+ Certificate: to claim your Basset Hound's Gold+ certificate he/she must meet the following criteria -
