Basset Health Group Concerns on Internet and Social Media advertising of Basset Hounds.
People can so easily be swayed by the unscrupulous and can be misled by adverts on internet puppy sites and those on social media stating that puppies are rare because they claim they are not bred with the “the usual health problems”, or they are bred with “straight legs, and pure” or their colour “Brindle” or “European Blue” and because of these statements they charge far inflated prices. Always be beware of people who have puppies all of the time these are usually commercial breeders.
Reputable breeders do not make any such claims and are only too willing to explain about health and colours. They will take time to talk to you about the breed, if a show person they will be concerned about the health and welfare of their puppies. They know the health issues (can be checked on this website) and colours (can be checked at the Kennel Club Website in the Breed Standard).
Never be afraid to ask breeders if they show, how long have they been involved in showing, have they been successful, how long have they been breeding for, how often do they have litters and importantly are they members of a breed club, do they health test, are they members of the BHHG Health Scheme (This can be checked on this website). Always ask if the breeder is happy to support you in joining a breed club.
We strongly advise that buyers make their initial puppy enquiries to Breed Club Secretaries and be led by them:
